From kids to masters of lawlessness: what were the names of cult rock bands at the beginning of their journey

No wonder they say: "As you call a ship, so it will sail." Therefore, choosing a band name is a big deal, and, unfortunately, there is no secret formula that would help the members with it. For decades, musicians have looked for inspiration in everything from the name of the street in their hometown and their favorite drink to horror films and even jokes!

History knows many bands that repeatedly experimented with the name and were everything they could before the members could not find one that was perfect for them. So what were some of our favorite and most iconic rock bands of all time called at the start of their careers? Let's find out together!

"Baby Without Clothes" (Creed)

One of the many names under which the rock band Creed first performed was Naked Toddler. This phrase, meaning "Baby Without Clothes", was taken from a newspaper headline that especially caught the attention of guitarist Mark Tremonti. Creed performed under this name for a very short time: it is known that the audience did not like it at all. Therefore, for the sake of the fans, the "Kid" had to be abandoned.

By the way, the rooted name of the group is translated as "The Doctrine", and therefore many believed that Creed is a Christian group! Largely because of the songs, whose lyrics are full of Christian references...

"Tom and Jerry" (Simon & Garfunkel)

Simon & Garfunkel

For folk duo Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel, the name Simon & Garfunkel seems like an obvious choice, but surprisingly, it wasn't their first name. In the late 1950s, the young couple took on the name "Tom and Jerry"! But that's not all...

Apparently, the duo got so excited that they even took on the appropriate pseudonyms: Garfunkel became Tom Graf, while his colleague Jerry Landis! However, they soon changed their name to Simon & Garfunkel (possibly due to copyright), and as a result, they entered this name into the musical history of the 60s!

"Tony Flow and the Wonderfully Majestic Masters of Mayhem" (Red Hot Chili Peppers)

"Tony Flow and the Wonderfully Majestic Masters of Mayhem" (Red Hot Chili Peppers)

Red Hot Chili Peppers

If you thought the Red Hot Chili Peppers was a long band name, you were wrong! Fans of Red Chili Peppers have to thank the band for calling themselves that in the end. After all, their original name was even longer and weirder!

Before they became peppers, they called themselves "Tony Flow and the Wonderfully Majestic Masters of Mayhem"! Explaining this idea, in an interview with journalist Anthony Kiedis said:

"That's how we wanted to play, majestic and chaotic!"

But, apparently, such a name turned out to be too long for the fans, although, it is worth noting, it perfectly described what the Red Hot Chili Peppers have always been! But why Tony Flow? That's another question...

"Polka Tulk Blues Band" (Black Sabbath)

Black Sabbath

The kings of "dark" and heavy classic rock, Black Sabbath experimented with the name for a long time. In particular, for some time they performed under the pseudonym Earth (Earth), but few people know that before that there was another, much longer and strange name ...

Osborne's original team called themselves the Polka Tulk Blues Band! It is not known exactly what exactly it was inspired by, but there are versions that the name appeared either from a brand of talcum powder or from an Indian-Pakistani clothing store... In any case, the name turned out to be too long and nondescript, and therefore the band was soon renamed Earth and then, finally, Black Sabbath, the inspiration that came to Ozzy from the 1963 horror film of the same name, which at the time was in theaters opposite their rehearsal space.

"Friday" (Radiohead)

Radiohead

When Radiohead first formed, the band members were still in school and could only rehearse on Fridays, hence their original name: On a Friday (literally translated as "On Friday").

They used this alias during their first few gigs, but when EMI offered a contract, the decision was made to rebrand themselves as Radiohead, which this time meant "Radio Head"! Apparently, the guys were serious about conquering the radio waves ...

Lanky John and the Silver Bugs (The Beatles)

The Beatles

The Beatles also did not appear immediately. It all started with The Quarrymen, a project that later evolved into the Beatles. But that's not the whole story...

The fact is that during the heyday of the career of the Liverpool Four, at the peak of fashion were the names of groups with the mention of some kind of insects. And then a brilliant idea came to John Lennon's head: to name the group Lanky John and the Silver Bugs. But in the end, everyone thought that this name was too long, but the idea with bugs was cool (by the standards of the fashion of those years). After a little experimenting with the letter "A", The Beatles appeared!
